5 KEY COMMITMMENT TO TACKLE THE ILLCIT TRADE: First Latin American Meeting on Maritime Law and Illicit Trade.

Illicit trade constitutes one of the main threats to the development of the maritime and logistics sector in the Latin American, which impact directly to the consumer. From September 28 to 30, 2021, the First Latin American Meeting of Maritime Law and Illicit Trade was held, organized by the United Nations University for the Peace, Andres Bello Catholic University, Superior Institute of Judiciary of Panama, and Crime Stopper Foundation. At the event, experts from the public and private sector, and academia, as well as international organizations from the region, the United States of America and Europe discussed this problem that directly affects the maritime and logistics sectors and, consequently, the supply chain. In conclusion, a Declaration of Commitment was issued containing five key actions on maritime law and transnational organized crime, among which we can highlight the following: (i) Promote Best Practices and Code of Conduct; (ii) Foster Public-Private Partnerships and public policies to combat illicit trade; (iii) Formulate plans, programs and projects related to transportation, logistics and maritime intermediation to prevent and combat illicit trade.
